What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral with unusual qualities, fibrous mineral Asbestos can only be identified under a microscope. Asbestos is found in the ground and is mined all over the world. Asbestos is strong enough to resist high temperatures, chemical attack and wear. A poor conductor, Asbestos insulates well against heat and electricity.
In the past,( from the 1940s until the late 80s) asbestos was used in around 3000 products manufactured worldwide, most commonly in the construction, car manufacturing and textile industries. Asbestos is dangerous because Asbestos splits into very fine dust particles, which can be inhaled.Asbestos exposure can cause ailments like mesothelioma and other problems.
So if you find that you do have asbestos, then it is usually the legal responsibility of the building owner to take appropriate action.
If any doubt exists and you are unsure as to what action to take, you must seek expert advice before you begin any work. Such advice is available in the first instance from your local authority or the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
