Types of mesothelioma.

There are major three types of mesothelioma. they are
1. Pleural Mesothelioma
2. Peritoneal Mesothelioma
3. Pericardial Mesothelioma

1.Pleural mesothelioma ( also known as mesothelioma of the pleura ) represents about 75% of all mesotheliomas. It is thought that pleural mesothelioma is caused by the inhaling of fibrous materials, including asbestos. Pleural mesothelioma can grow quickly and enlarge the pleural space, causing it to fill with fluid. The pleural type of Mesothelioma grows in the tissues covering the lungs as a tumor of the lining surrounding the lungs. Pleural Mesothelioma may cause shortness of breath, fluid build-up, chest pain, hoarseness, coughing up blood, muscle weakness, paralysis, sensory loss and swelling of the face and arms. There are two types of surgeries that are commonly performed to cure Pleural Mesothelioma, both of which involve removing portions of the lungs. The first operation is called a pleurectomy/decortication, which involves the removal of part of the lung lining in order to remove the tumor. The second surgery is called an extrapleural pneumonectomy. During this particular surgery, the lining, diaphragm, pericardium, and the whole lung may be removed in order to completely remove the tumor.
Benign (Non-Cancerous) pleural mesothelioma

Benign pleural mesothelioma is a non-cancerous tumor that has not spread to other organs of the body. If the tumor is large, it may squeeze the lung itself and cause shortness of breath and pain.

Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Malignant Pleural mesothelioma is cancerous and can spread to other parts of the body. This rare form of cancer is found in the pleural sac lining of the lung. Exposure to asbestos is considered the primary cause of pleural mesothelioma.

Symptoms

Pleural mesothelioma may include shortness of breath, chest pain, back pain, pain in the rib cage, fluid build-up in the lung lining, hoarseness, coughing up blood, swelling of the face and arms, muscle weakness, paralysis and sensory loss.

2.Peritoneal Mesothelioma ( cancer of the peritoneum or cancer of the abdominal lining ) is one of three types of a rare Mesothelioma cancer related to asbestos exposure: peritoneal mesothelioma describes the type of cancer that occurs in the tissues lining the abdominal cavity. Peritoneal Mesothelioma can cause stomach pain, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, hernia, fluid in the abdominal cavity or a mass in the abdomen. A surgery known as a laparotomy may be performed during which the doctor will open up the abdomen to remove the entire tumor. One way doctors diagnose peritoneal mesothelioma is by looking inside the abdominal cavity with an instrument called a peritoneoscope. In this procedure, a cut is made through the abdomen wall and the peritoneoscope is placed into the abdomen. This test, called a peritoneoscopy, is usually performed in the hospital.

Some patients develop excessive fluid in the abdomen. This is called an effusion or ascites. A doctor may take a sample of such fluid to diagnose peritoneal mesothelioma. Fluid in the abdomen might also be drained to relieve symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma. The procedure for drawing out this fluid is called “paracentesis”.

Symptoms

The early symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma often resemble those of the flu, with stomach pains, and fever. The symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma may include stomach pain, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, hernia, fluid in the abdominal cavity or a mass in the abdomen.

3. Mesothelioma of the abdomen is called Pericardial Mesothelioma ( cancer of the heart lining or mesothelioma of the pericardium ). peritoneal mesothelioma is very rare asbestos-linked cancer. Pericardial Mesothelioma can cause shortness of breath and chest pain. A surgery called an extrapleural pneumonectomy can be preformed to remove the tumor. Patients who develop excessive fluid around the heart, called an effusion, may have a sample of the fluid taken to diagnose pericardial mesothelioma. Fluid might also be drained to relieve symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma. The procedure for drawing out this fluid is called “pericardiocentesis.”

Symptoms

The early symptoms indicating pericardial mesothelioma include chest pain, dyspnea, cough, and palpitations.

While pericardial mesothelioma has not been definitively linked to asbestos exposure, the indications are strong that pericardial mesothelioma is related to asbestos, as are the other forms of mesothelioma. Patients with pericardial mesothelioma may be eligible to recover medical fees and other costs associated with pericardial mesothelioma from parties proven responsible for asbestos exposure.

With all Pericardial, Peritoneal and Pleural Mesothelioma, radiation treatments and chemotherapy are also options. Today, the government has strict laws limiting and prohibiting the use of asbestos in building products. Removal of asbestos products from existing buildings is also heavily regulated.
